MAY INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS TAKE NON CREDIT COURSES?
International students can take 097 and 099 courses for non credit, however if their home country is giving them a scholarship they will not pay for tuition for developmental coursework. Therefore many international students will not want to take classes that they are not getting credit toward their degree.
WHAT VISA REGULATIONS DO I HAVE TO FOLLOW REGARDING CREDIT HOURS?
Undergraduate International students must have 12 credit hours. They can’t drop a class to be below full time unless they have one time special permission from International Student and Scholar Services. Of those 12 credit hours 9 credits has to be in the classroom, one 3 credit class can be online. International students are allowed unlimited online classes in J term and Summer terms. (Graduate students must be full time 9 credit hours, only one on line class per semester).
HOW DO I PLACE IN CWP FOR INCOMING FRESHMAN INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS?
During Academic Day the Friday of Bengal Bound Week, placement testing with the Writing Center has been scheduled. Additional test scores can be located on banner in SOATEST for general placement.
CPT- CIRCULAR PLACEMENT TRAINING APPROVAL PROCESS
In order to maintain the student visa status, international students must have approval to work off campus for internships, practicums, volunteer work both paid and unpaid. The department has a form that needs to be completed by the academic advisor with a copy of the student employment, or internship letter submitted to our office. Faculty must sign that this is an integral part of their academic experience and required as part of the degree for off campus work to be approved. This will ensure an update to their I-20 prior to the work or internship beginning. If the students does not receive prior authorization from this office and their I-20 is not updated they are in violation of their visa.
CHANGE OF MAJOR
Students are required by their visa to notify our office of a change of major. Our office confirms this on Banner and Degreeworks before updating their I-20.
PROCESS FOR EXTENDING A PROGRAM
The student’s length of approved time in the US is based on the dates on the I-20 and the same date is on their visa. At times students need extra time to complete their program in the US. In order to have authorization to remain longer, our office needs to review Degree Works and receive a completed program extension form with the new date of expected graduation. This is very important as our office can not authorize an extension without the academic department approval. Once paperwork is submitted and update I-20 is issued for the student to remain until the next term.
PROCESS FOR EXTENDING A PROGRAM- DUE TO MASTERS THESIS RESEARCH
Students must have a program extension form completed prior to changes being made on their I-20. These are the same steps as above. Note: Students must be enrolled in a class even if they are working on their thesis it can have 0 credits but they must show enrollment as a requirement for their visa.
